What this publication is for

With Some Confidence is an independent, pseudonymous publication examining questions where the facts are contested, the explanation is uncertain or the next development matters. Its subjects include geopolitics, security, technology, information operations, institutions and political change.

The product is an assessment: a clearly framed question, a substantive answer where one is defensible, and enough evidence and reasoning for readers to examine that answer. It does not require access to classified information. It does require care with the information available.

Independence and judgement

Independence means reaching conclusions on the evidence, without an obligation to defend a party, government, company or preferred explanation. It does not mean giving every claim equal weight. Unequal evidence can justify unequal conclusions.

We distinguish documented facts from reported claims, assumptions and inference. We consider explanations that could prove our preferred account wrong. When the evidence supports a judgement, we make it; when it cannot support one, we say so.

Why the name?

“With Some Confidence” nods to the language of intelligence assessment. A judgement and the strength of its foundation are different things. The name is also a useful restraint on getting carried away.

Who is accountable?

Writing appears under the publication’s name. Pseudonymity protects the operator’s privacy; it does not exempt the work from scrutiny. Readers should be able to examine sources, challenge reasoning and see substantive corrections. This is an independent publication, with no claim to official intelligence authority or privileged access.

AI assistance

AI may help organise research, test alternative explanations or edit prose. It is not a source of evidence. The editor remains responsible for checking sources, quotations, reasoning and judgements. Assessments should disclose material AI assistance and its verification limits.
